With a bat house, you can help insect-eating bats find a safe home to take shelter in. As today’s houses are better insulated and more solid, bats are finding it harder to find places to take shelter. What do bats eat?

A little-known fact is that bats are one of our best mosquito eaters. Every day, bats eat thousands of insect pests such as mosquitoes, moths, beetles and other insects that cause problems for vegetation. Bats are an important animal for the ecosystem, and putting up bat roosts in your yard can also help bats chase away pesky mosquitoes and pests from your garden.

The bat roost is available in two sizes

The bat roost is available in two different sizes. Both bat roosts have double sleeping chambers and slots in the walls for the bats to hang in. The bat roosts also have metal brackets on the back to make it easier for you to nail them to the house wall.

A good tip is to set up two bat roosts next to each other. Bats like to live together and the more protection they have, the more likely they are to move into the bat roost.

Placement of bat roosts

A bat roost should ideally be placed in a shady south-facing position, about 2-4 metres off the ground in gardens where insects are abundant. Make sure the approach hole is clear and that no branches or other vegetation are in the way. Avoid placement near lamps and other lighting. Bats like it when several roosts are close together, as this gives them more escape routes and more space to live in.
